Advent 1: Self-Emptying Love
Self-emptying Love withdraws to create a void in which humanity is created. Humanity exists in this void – that which is not God, but is created by God. Human existence implies human freedom since all human action occurs in this space. God will not revoke this freedom, even risking rejection and death.
It starts as soon as God enters the world – there’s no room at the inn! No time for that! He was in the world and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him. He was despised, rejected, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. God chooses this so that human freedom will have its say – no matter what.
Are you brokenhearted, lost, and alone, wondering if you will ever be received? Have you chosen this path or has it been forced upon you? No matter. God stands with you in that mass of humanity, king or peasant, who has ever been despised and rejected, because God knows it personally. Emmanuel, God with us – no matter what.
