Spiritual Direction

How is the Divine Light reflected in you?

What distortions and blocks prevent that from being fully realized?

Are you at a point in your spiritual journey where you would welcome insight from another person?

If these are live questions in your life, perhaps you might consider exploring spiritual direction.

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is regular time set aside to explore your relationship to the Divine and to listen for movement of the Spirit in your life and being. Typically, a director and directee meet for an hour about once a month. The work of the director is to listen for and “second the motions” of the Holy Spirit, as Richard Rohr puts it. Other words to refer to the Divine include:  God, the Holy Spirit, the Holy, the Universe, Wisdom, Presence, or any other term that conveys to you a sense of the sacred.

What can I talk about in a spiritual direction session?

Anything! We humans are both matter and spirit, so anything in our material lives can be seen as infused with spirit, as God-in-us. Spiritual direction can be a tool to better connect our material and spiritual lives and therefore become more whole. The session doesn’t have to be “about” God, but is rather a recognition of God’s presence in all that we do and how we can open to it. It is also important to note that anything said in the session is private and confidential.

How is spiritual direction different from personal counselling or psychological therapy?

There are some elements in common. The directee often presents an issue which he or she finds to be blocking their personal growth and well-being. However, spiritual direction is not about solving the personal, psychological, or even spiritual problems of the directee. The director’s task is to listen for movements of the Spirit and to encourage the directee to do the same. It is not about finding solutions, but about opening to the Divine. In doing so, help often does come in unexpected ways.

Can we meet for spiritual direction?

Yes. I am currently taking new directees.

Where would we meet?

We can meet in person at my home in Winnipeg, or I can come to you if you are local. I also meet directees via video chat or phone.

How can I take the next step?

Contact me here to arrange an appointment. The first meeting is exploratory, and thus free of charge. We would explore where you are in your personal journey, what goals you have in spiritual direction, and whether we would work well together. I charge $60. for subsequent one-hour appointments.

How can I prepare for our first session?

Before the first meeting, I invite you to consider the following three traditional questions of hospitality. Answer them as literally or symbolically as you wish.

  • Who are you?
  • Why are you here?
  • Where are you going?
