Today is Ash Wednesday, March 2, 2022. Why a photo of the day for Lent?
Many people on Twitter have been saying that they are not planning to give up anything for Lent this year, including Twitter, which is a popular choice of something to “give up”. The world has had enough sorrow and pain in the last couple of years, the reasoning goes. Why add more? Especially if “more” is only a gesture of performative asceticism.
Fair enough. People are tired and perhaps do not have the energy or attention required for a meaningful discipline. Perhaps this year needs a season of rest, a season of beauty to nourish our weary souls.
This is not to deny that the world is a mess right now, but rather to say that the world does not need to overpower us with its sorrows.
In this season of sorrows, I offer a place of rest and refreshment. Feel free to use any of the photos as you see fit, as long as you give credit and don’t sell them. I hope they will give you an open space in your day, if only for a moment, to catch your breath and drink in the beauty of the world.
