Greater Light

Sun and Moon Calendar Image

The greater light to rule the day,
the lesser light to rule the night:
The pink-eyed sun, segmented like an orange,
benign and beautiful;
the child-moon in repose, eyes closed, asleep,
resting against the body of its parent-sun.

The sun's siblings, too --
Gliese, the Centauri twins, Wolf, the huge Kepler clan.
Who lives there? Such big houses! There must be someone home!
(These are not the names they call themselves, I'm sure,
but we haven't had a chance to ask.)

And our home, Earth, Gaia;
we swarm like bees about their business,
but sometimes stop, look up, and wonder,
and think it's time we gave Home a call.
